RHS Flower Show, Tatton Park

Wednesday 19th - Sunday 23rd July 2017

I am delighted to be able to show my sculptural work at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show.  The Art in the Garden feature is an area within the Show where visitors will be able to sit and relax amongst art works chosen and curated by the RHS Selection Panel.

This opportunity is particularly special for me as in 2002, 2003 and 2004 I designed and helped build small gardens at Chelsea (2002) and Hampton Court (2003 & 2004).  As a result of these experiences, looking for and commissioning artists to create work for the spaces, I decided to study art with the view to making work to go in the space.  By displaying my work at an RHS garden show I feel I have come full circle.

'Cloud' - mild steel, glass and colour.

We will be exhibiting a large scale, site responsive, immersive installation.

Atmospheric lighting conditions were the inspiration for our ‘cloud’ installation.

Beginning with an emotional response to lighting in my photographic images we considered how light and the effects of coloured light evoke an emotional response.  We observed how textures appear to change when light levels, colour and direction change.

The installation will feature over 1000 individual glass and steel shapes suspended in close proximity and lit from within. Similarities involved in the practise of working with hot glass and forging steel enabled us to create similar shapes in both materials.   Each shape is unique, created in part by the materials themselves during the process of heating the glass and metal. The transparent and reflective surfaces of the shapes disperse light to create an atmospheric cloud-like form.

Parallax AF - NEW YORK

November 17th & 18th 2012

Parallax Art Fair New York will be held at The Prince George, East 27th Street, between Madison and 5th Avenue, close to Madison Square Park.

Parallax AF grew out of an international exhibition called "Parallax" that was conceived and curated by the art historian Dr Chris Barlow. It is different from other artists' fairs in that it is like a specialised exhibition based on new ideas drawn from the philosophy of Art History.

I will be exhibiting 'Falling' stainless steel woven wirecloth leaves.

Pilgrimage

'Pilgrimage' is a travelling exhibition of work by myself and two other artists, Sarah Baird and Stefanie Moss. Although we work in very different media we have come together in a collaboration of similar ideas from discussion on the theme of pilgrimage. "A pilgrimage is a journey of risk and renewal. A journey without challenge has no meaning. One without purpose has no soul and by definition it is life changing. A pilgrimage is to lose yourself or to find yourself". This travelling exhibition is on it's own pilgrimage and will be shown in a series of galleries during 2012.

For the 'Pilgrimage' exhibition I will be creating new work subtly based around circles. My initial thought about what the word 'pilgrimage' meant to me was that I felt as if my life has been a journey leading me back, full circle, to doing the things I enjoyed most as a small child.

Sarah Baird is a painter who creates mixed media works, recording her experiences in a diary of layered calligraphic markings. Sarah Baird - http://sarah-baird.blogspot.com/

Stefanie Moss is a textile artist who has created large hangings which incorporate the theme of journeys, architecture and maps. Stefanie Moss - www.stefaniemoss.com

I have created a sculpture for a Show Garden at this year's Show. The garden was awarded a silver-guilt by the judges.

Walk The Seasons

Solo Exhibition

April 2011 - weekends 9/10, 16/17 - 12 noon until 4pm

Benham Gallery, Cuckoo Farm Studios, Boxted Road, Colchester, Essex CO4 5HH

The exhibition focuses upon our seasonal relationship with leaves and trees.   In spring the space around a leaf is small and intimate as the leaf breaks into bud.  During summer individual leaves are absorbed into the tree canopy above.  By autumn the different characteristic of trees and leaves become apparent.  Scale and form create patterns in the landscape over winter.

The subject matter for this exhibition is leaves and trees but it is about the space as much as the physical work.  Prior to studying art I had worked as a garden designer and I wanted to make work to go in a garden space, having spent time focusing on the artwork I want to re-engage with the space it occupies.

'Breeze'

Inspired by autumn leaves blowing in the breeze I wanted to experiment with ways of suspending my metal leaves to enable them to move freely with the wind. Employing the same forging techniques I use to create my plant forms I have adapted the designs to form letters.  The word 'breeze' will be suspended within the tree canopy and 'leaves' will be spelt out on the ground below. The stainless steel woven wirecloth leaves will be suspended from the mild steel forms.

My work will be at The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens from 22nd May until 31st October 2010

Closer

Solo Exhibition

From 28th March until 24th April 2010 I will also be exhibiting photographic work at the Colne Gallery, Colchester Hospital Art Gallery, Colchester Hospital (situated on the first floor main corridor),Turner Road, Colchester, Essex, where the aim of the gallery is to enhance the environment of the hospital through art. Although I chose to specialise in working with metal for my 3D work, photography was a major factor in my inspiration. In this exhibition, as well as displaying my photographs traditionally framed, I will also be experimenting with applying my images to other surfaces.

Canopy

In December last year, after graduating in the summer with a BA (Hons) Art and Design, 3D Design and Craft, I was awarded the Cuckoo Farm Studios/Colchester Institute Graduate in Residence Scholarship Award. This award had provided me with a studio for a year where I can experiment with materials and ideas. As part of the award I will be exhibiting my work at the Minories Art Gallery, 74 High Street, Colchester, Essex CO1 1UE - www.theminories.co.uk - from 20th February until 23rd April 2010. I will be exhibiting 3D and photographic work. The work will be a progression of the ideas and techniques explored during and since my degree.
